How We Inspire – Literacy Labs

Our ‘literacy labs’ are innovative hubs that train tomorrow’s leaders today. Our labs are twofold- fully functional community libraries, stocked with books and technology, with a twist- unparalleled literacy and leadership training that results in inner peace, community peace, and eventually world peace.  The lab is a place for all- adults take advantage of our library facilities, while youth are trained as leaders in the reading, writing and the arts within their communities. We link literacy with leadership, creating a corps of socially conscious youth whose mission is identical to ours; to create and sustain peace.

Why It Works

The literacy lab is our hub, the youth are our spokes. We believe that a generation of youth readers and writers, artists and activists will change the world. Through our three tiered “Peace First” model, youth are trained in literacy, the arts and career readiness, while learning how to lead their community as activists for peace and prosperity.

The Kibera Lab in Nairobi, Kenya

Located in the largest informal settlement in East Africa, Kibera’s first literacy lab is designed to serve over 100 youth, improving youth and community literacy, providing essential arts, culture and sports curriculum, and training a new generation of authors, athletes, artists and activists. Through our three innovative curriculum programs, Pass the Mic, Read to Lead, and the Real Pretty Project, our Kibera lab will grow leaders ready to take on the 21st century.
